Canon DSLR 400D is an amazing one, and very good for beginners, you can learn a lot with it. And it does allow you to take excellent photos.
I have it myself, and a couple of my friends do as well (all of us amateur or semi-pro photographers, some of us taking a course in photo school), and we are all satisfied with it. It has the best ratings out of all digital Canons according to flickr, and is fairly cheap, and you will have more money to spend on lenses!

Actually its all depends on your budget. There are many good DSLR cameras around but the prices varies. So its hard to give recommendation if you didn’t state your budget. If you want to check the review and specs of the DSLRs, you can browse the link given.

Lenses last a lifetime and should be included in your will; bodies last a few years, at which time they should be dropped at Goodwill.:-)
A DSLR lens is an investment. You want to first choose lenses, not bodies, first, when selecting a DSLR line. Look for the best corner-to-corner resolution you can get in your price range. I came from Nikon film SLRs to Olympus Digital after just such an analysis. I wanted to continue with Nikon, but the superiority of Olympus Zuiko Digital offerings was clearly superior to Nikkor.
Compare tests of Olympus “Standard Grade” lenses (such as 14-42 and 40-150 kit lenses, 9-18, 70-300, 35 macro), and “High Grade” lenses (e.g. 12-60, 50-200, and 50 macro) to other mfrs. The basic 14-42 kit lens outperforms Nikon and Canon’s 18-55. The high-end “kit” 12-60 f/2.8-3.5 is without peer, performing more like a bag of primes than a 24-120mm (35mm equ.) zoom. And 50mm Macro may be the best SLR lens, ever.
Micro Four-Thirds promises to turn the interchangeable lens camera business on its head. Olympus’s M4/3 camera will be out next month. All the Standard lenses listed above will retain full autofocus and metering on M4/3rds bodies (w/an adapter).\
